  1. Method of studying the atomic and molecular
  2. structure of crystalline substances by using
  3. X-rays. X-rays directed at such substances
  4. spread out as they pass through the crystals
  5. owing to diffraction (the slight spreading of
  6. waves around the edge of an opaque object) of
  7. the rays around the atoms. By using
  8. measurements of the position and intensity of
  9. the diffracted waves, it is possible to
  10. calculate the shape and size of the atoms in
  11. the crystal. The method has been used to
  12. study substances such as DNA that are found
  13. in living material.
